Cops threatened with bricks, racial abuse in Piccadilly Gardens and international wanted man arrested - a busy night for city centre police

Stretched city centre police faced a busy night on Friday - with reports of racial abuse, threats to officers and drunken abuse to contend with.

A total of 15 arrests were made in 24 hours, Inspector Jon Middleton tweeted.

A man caught carrying two bricks tried to throw one at an officer when he was challenged, Insp Middleton said.

In another incident, a man was detained for allegedly abusing staff at an office block after trying to break in.

And officers caught a man wanted on a European arrest warrant, the tweet said.

Police also stopped a stolen car on Southgate and found a huge haul of drugs.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and possession with intent to supply.

Insp Middleton tweeted photos of dozens of snap bags of  powder following the arrest.

A man and a women were also arrested on suspicion of street robbery at the junction with Piccadilly and Newton Street.

And a man was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order in Piccadilly Gardens .

The victim was 'minding her own business' when she was targeted, police said.

In a tweet, put up at 12.44am on the GMP City Centre Twitter account, Insp Middleton said: "15 arrests in the city centre in the last 24hrs, including sus drug dealers, a drunk trying to enter an office block and being abusive to staff there, a man wanted on a European arrest warrant and a man carrying two bricks who when challenged tried to throw one of the bricks at the officer."
