Cops: Subway employee threatened before suspect flees with cash

Dec. 14--A convicted felon who allegedly robbed a Subway sandwich shop after asking the clerk if he wanted to "see Christmas" and his "family again" probably won't see his own family on the holiday, instead spending it at the Cook County Jail with other inmates.

Tremain Williams, 36, of the 1500 block of West Jonquil Terrace, was ordered held in lieu of $350,000 bail Saturday by Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. on a charge of aggravated robbery with a firearm, a Class 1 felony.

"Enjoy the turkey roll on Christmas Day," Bourgeois told Williams with a scowl from the stand after setting bond.

Williams ordered food Friday at the Subway at 6067 N. Lincoln Ave., and with his hand in his jacket told the male employee at the cash register "Do you want to see Christmas? Do you want to see your family again? Don't make me take it out. Give me the money from the register," according to Cook County prosecutors and a police report.

Williams then fled the store with about $310 and his food, according to prosecutors and the police report. Police arrested Williams later Friday based on a description from the Subway employee and after the restaurant provided video of the crime.

Police said they found $15 in his pockets and $281 in the bag of a woman he was with who has not been charged.

In 1998, Williams was convicted of murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, according to prosecutors and court records. It is not known when he was released.
