Cops searching Marquette Park Lagoon for human remains

July 15--Chicago police continued searching for human remains in Marquette Park Lagoon Wednesday morning.

Police Marine Unit divers arrived at the eastern portion of the lagoon near California Avenue, just north of 71st Street, Tuesday evening after detectives received a tip that a man may have killed his girlfriend, cut up her body and dumped it in the water, according to a law enforcement source with knowledge of the search.

Police had at least part of the lagoon drained to conduct the search, the source said.

As the sun set during a breezy Tuesday evening, a Marine Unit van blocked the entrance of a bridge that crosses the lagoon. A detective, uniformed officer and one or two other officers wearing life jackets were on scene.

A canopy tent covered a set of chairs and a raft on a grassy area next to the van.

About 50 yards to the south, police had brought in a light truck alongside shrubbery that surrounds the water. The truck hoisted a set of floodlights into the air near the section of the lagoon that was drained.

A reddish-orange pump sounded loudly as bicyclists rode by and as a woman passed through a jogging path pushing a baby stroller.

A pipe stretched from the lagoon about 100 yards to the east, where water was being drained into a grassy area beside a baseball diamond.

A backhoe and trucks from the city's Departments of Water Management and Fleet Management were also on scene.

Around 8:45 p.m., police began cordoning off a section of road alongside the eastern portion of the lagoon, where the investigation was concentrated.
