Police and bomb squad swoop on Glasgow street amid ongoing incident

Police have swooped on the east end of Glasgow today after a suspicious item was found.

Officers from Police Scotland sealed off Dalmarnock Road to deal with what some locals believe is an 'unexploded bomb'.

Rumours of a ' World War II ' explosive being discovered have emerging on social media but it has not been confirmed by emergency services.

Glasgow City Council has confirmed the street has been closed off eastbound at the junction of Springfield Road.

Cops and the bomb disposal unit are currently on the scene.

Inspector Stevie Kinvig from London Road Police Office said: "As part of an ongoing police enquiry, officers attended an address on Dalmarnock Road around 4.30am on Friday, 17 July, 2020 when a suspicious item was found within.

"As a precaution, a number of surrounding residential properties have been evacuated and roads surrounding the area have been temporarily closed.

"There are no injuries and the EOD are currently in attendance.

"Enquiries remain ongoing into the incident."

A Royal Navy spokesman said: "I can confirm that a Royal Navy bomb disposal team from Northern Diving Group, based at HM Naval Base Clyde, are attending the scene in support of Police Scotland."

Council's Traffic Control and Management team (TRAFFCOM) confirmed: "Due to a Police incident, Dalmarnock Road  is closed eastbound at Springfield Road until further notice.

"Drivers are advised to use an alternate route."

Meanwhile, local bus services have been diverted.

First Glasgow travel company tweeted: "Dalmarnock Road closed both ways at Dalmarnock Bridge Diverting via Rutherglen Main Street, Glasgow Road, Shawfield Rd over Rutherglen Bridge Right Clyde Gateway left Dalmarnock Rd to city.

"From the city reverse of above.
