Police Scotland said it was a targeted assault and there is not believed to be a threat to the wider public.

Images have emerged online of police and paramedics tending to the man close to the Premier Inn hotel.

Officers have cordoned off James Watt Street at its junction with Argyle Street.

Inspector Gareth Griffiths said: "We were called around 12.10pm on Sunday to a report of an assault in Argyle Street, Glasgow.

"Officers are currently at the scene. We believe this was a targeted assault and we do not believe there is a threat to the wider public.”

Five police cars were seen responding to the incident, along with an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle.

It comes just two days after emergency crews were scrambled to West George Street in the city centre after six people were injured in a knife attack.

The attacker has been identified as Badreddin Abadlla Adam, 28, from Sudan.

The asylum seeker was shot dead by police marksmen shortly after stabbing six people in the Park Inn Hotel, including police officer David Whyte.
