Cops probing Glasgow city centre fire after building left 'significantly damaged' in major blaze

A major Glasgow blaze left a building 'significantly damaged' sparking a police probe.

Around 40 firefighters tackled the huge flames in the city centre on High Street after the fire broke out this morning.

Thick black smoke was seen billowing from the scene as the alarm was raised around 1.27am.

Now officers are appealing for witnesses after a the fire took over a derelict premises above the Old College Bar.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service say they were met with a “well-developed fire” and nine fire appliances, including two height appliances, were still at the scene at 7am.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and officers remain at the scene.

Nobody was injured as a result of the fire but it has caused significant damage to the building.

Detective Constable Neil Bonsor, of Stewart Street CID, said: “Our enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The blaze has caused significant damage to the building's structure.

“We would urge anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident, and who saw any suspicious behaviour to contact us.

“Anyone with information that could assist our investigation should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0119 of 4 May.

"Alternatively a report can be made to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
