Cops: Man who tried to run over officers shot by police on Far South Side

Feb. 08--A 34-year-old man who tried to run over Chicago police officers who were making a traffic stop related to a drug investigation was shot by police Saturday afternoon in the West Pullman neighborhood, police said.

The man was shot in the side a little after 2:36 p.m. in the 300 block of West 115th Street and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment, according to police.

Members of the Gang Enforcement Section of the Chicago police Department tried to pull over a man in a traffic stop, said Area Central Patrol Deputy Chief David McNaughton. Officers in two cars were involved in trying to pull the man over, police sources said.

Officers asked the man to get out of his car, but the man refused, and tried to back into two police officers, hitting a squad car and then put his car into drive, trying to strike two other police officers, McNaughton said.

The officers then fired their guns, McNaughton said.

The man's Lincoln Aviator remained in front of a Quick Mart near the corner of 115th and Harvard Avenue as police investigated.

Preliminary information that the man was shot in the back was incorrect, police said.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting, a spokesman said.
