Cops launch probe after 'racist anti-Irish march' in Glasgow sparks fury

Police Scotland has launched a probe after a 'racist anti-Irish march' in Glasgow sparked outrage.

We reported on Sunday how a group of football fans were filmed walking through Glasgow city centre singing "the famine is over, why don't you go home".

The group - believed to be Rangers fans - have been slammed after clip emerged of the "racist anti-Irish march".

Dozens of supporters were filmed walking under the bridge on Argyle Street near Glasgow Central station singing the sectarian chant.

The video sparked fury on social media, with Humza Yousaf among those condemning what he described as the 'disgusting' scenes in the city.

Police officers, who were seen walking on the pavement at either side of the group, also came under fire from prominent human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar.

Mr Anwar criticised the officers for not intervening, taking to Twitter to ask why the force was 'facilitating (again) a racist anti-Irish march' with 'no kettling or arrests'.

Police Scotland have now confirmed an investigation is underway with enquiries into the incident ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of sectarian singing by a group of people in the Jamaica Street area of Glasgow on Sunday, 29 August, 2021.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
