Cops: K-9 unit tracks man charged in armed robbery

Feb. 26--Bail was set at $100,000 this week for a Carpentersville man accused of using a BB gun during a robbery Wednesday night, officials said.

According to Carpentersville police, officers were called at about 5:10 p.m. to the Phillip's 66, 170 Lake Marian Road, for the report of an armed robbery. According to police, a man wearing a ski mask approached the clerk and demanded money while displaying what appeared to be a handgun. He then fled, police said.

Elgin Police assisted by sending a K-9 unit as Carpentersville's was unavailable, officials said. The K-9 tracked a scent from the scene to an address in the 500 block of Waco Lane. The suspect was taken into custody at his home within an hour of the initial incident -- which is where the dog led officers, officials said.

Tyler M. Klainos, 20, of the 500 block of Waco Lane, Carpentersville, was charged with a Class X felony count of armed robbery without a firearm and a Class 4 felony count of possession of a controlled substance. According to police, he is accused of robbing the clerk while armed with a BB gun, taking between $150-$180 in cash.

"We also located several hypodermic syringes and paraphernalia with suspected heroin residue and Klainos was also charged with possession of heroin," said Cmdr. Timothy Bosshart.

Klainos' next court date was set for March 10.
