Cops issue warning after Scots beauty spot trashed by litter louts

Louts have been slammed for trashing a picturesque Scots beauty spot and leaving a "disgusting mess".

Reports of litter being left across Scotland's parks and green spaces have rocketed since the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Furious wardens were stunned to find a trash-strewn site on the Pentland Hills on Friday when they came across camping equipment and piles of rubbish left behind, as well as a mobile phone.

In a statement issued via the regional park's official Facebook page, they urged members of the public to report any instances of anti-social behaviour.

They said: "Our officers have been cleaning up some disgusting messes today, at both Bonaly and Harlaw.

"If you see groups making a mess in the hills (or any other kind of anti-social behaviour), please call 101 if after 4.30pm, and let the police know.

"Try and give an exact location.

"The phone that was found in the mess will be handed into Oxgangs Police Station tomorrow morning."

Drunken revellers have flouted social distancing rules to congregate together in open spaces and rural hot-spots across Scotland throughout lockdown, some travelling more than the recommended five-mile radius to get there.

Restrictions were eased last week as the country enters phase two of the coronavirus lockdown.

But strict governance on the distance people are allowed to travel, and a ban on meeting more than two other households outside, still remains in place.

Police in Edinburgh issued a warning to anyone planning to make a journey to socialise with a group of pals.

Chief Superintendent Sean Scott said: "We recognise that people have made significant sacrifices but we would ask they use their judgement and avoid making unnecessary journeys to areas in the city such as Portobello beach, Holyrood Park, The Pentlands and The Meadows.

“I appreciate that young people may be particularly frustrated at the current situation, but please resist the temptation to gather in large numbers as these measures are in place to protect you too.”

The warning comes just days after cops hit out at litter bugs who left an entire campsite full of litter at Loch Arkaig, near Lochaber.

And we also reported that police have issued an urgent alert after a rise in illegal mass gatherings organised on social media.

They revealed two youngsters were arrested at an East Renfrewshire park on Thursday night (June 18), one in connection with spitting at officers.
