Cops had to spray prisoner who was being rowdy in back of vehicle

A police van nearly crashed because a prisoner was being so rowdy in the back seat.

Officers used incapacitating spray to calm Paul Lewis down, but eventually the driver pulled over because he was being kicked repeatedly.

Lewis, 38, of Tamarack Crescent, Viewpark, was jailed for six months at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted culpable and reckless conduct that put police officers and other road users in danger.

Lewis was being taken to Coatbridge police station on December 17 after being arrested at his home.

He also admitted assaulting his mother by pulling her hair, kicking PC Martyn Allan and headbutting PC Elliott Newmarch repeatedly.

Morag McLintock, prosecuting, said Lewis’s mum was worried because he was drinking and not taking medication.

An argument started and he was abusive towards her and pulled her hair.

Ms McLintock told the court: “The police were called, but as he was being driven to the station, Lewis caused difficulties.

“The officers had to use Pava spray, but his aggressive behaviour continued.

“The driver, PC Allan, was being kicked repeatedly and his concerns were such that he had to bring the vehicle to a safe stop.”

Defence agent James Swinburne said Lewis had drunk a bottle and a half of Buckfast wine.

Mr Swinburne told the court: “He was heavily intoxicated and remembers very little.

“A minor argument with his mum over his use of a mobile phone escalated.

“He is, rightly, ashamed of his behaviour. His mum is willing to take him back, but his behaviour has to change.”

Passing sentence, Sheriff Thomas Millar told Lewis: “You have a record and nothing in the criminal justice social work report persuades me that anything other than custody is appropriate.

“These charges are serious, particularly putting police officers and other road users at risk.”
