Cops find notes written in blood after son kills dad in murder-suicide at Paisley home

A troubled son snapped during the coronavirus lockdown and murdered his dad at the family home - and then wrote a note in blood explaining his actions.

Nicholas Mooney, 23, killed James, 60, before taking his own life.

It’s understood he stabbed his dad and then turned the knife on himself.

Officers who arrived at their £300,000 home in upmarket Ralston, Paisley, last Thursday night found notes written in blood - and blood all over the property.

Nicholas - who is understood to have suffered from mental health problems - also used an iPad to explain what he’d done.

An area around the Lanfine Road property was sealed off as forensic officers combed it for clues. But sources revealed that officers faced a scene of horror when they first arrived to investigate.

One source said: “It was a murder-suicide - and it’s an absolute tragedy.

“There were notes written in blood in the house. Nicholas stabbed his dad and then killed himself in the bath. He left a bloody note on the shower screen where they found him.

The note said something like, ‘It’s nothing to do with anybody else’.

“There were arrows drawn in blood on the note, pointing down to his iPad, which was on the bathroom floor. The iPad had more details on it.

When police arrived, there was nothing needing investigated - it was spelled out for them in blood what had happened.

“But they had to follow protocols and carry out a proper investigation, just to be on the safe side.

“It really is a tragedy - two lives taken and a family obliterated.”

Detective Inspector Erin Renwick, of Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team, said: “Following postmortem examinations, the death of the 60-year-old man is being treated as murder.

The death of the 23-year-old man is not being treated as suspicious.

“Although our detailed investigation is continuing to establish the exact circumstances, we do believe that it was contained within this house and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”
