Cops descend on Scots street after man 'spotted carrying machete'

Police descended on a Greenock street this morning after a man was spotted allegedly carrying a machete.

Emergency services raced to Newton Street around 10.40am today after a man was reported to have been seen with the bladed weapon.

It is understood officers pursued the suspect on a short chase which only lasted minutes and recovered the weapon.

A 34-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.

There were no reported injuries following the incident and enquiries remain ongoing.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact police.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We received reports of a man carrying a bladed weapon on Newton Street, Greenock, around 10.40am on Friday, 20 August.

"Officers traced the man within minutes and the 34-year-old was arrested.

"There are no reported injuries, enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information should contact us on 101 quoting incident number 1012 of 20 August."
