Cops called into probe 'financial irregularities' at St Mirren

Police have been alerted to investigate “financial irregularities” at St Mirren FC.

Forensic accountants, Police Scotland and HM Revenue and Customs have been called in after concerns were flagged last month.

Earlier this year, St Mirren revealed plans to become a fan-owned club by joining forces with charity Kibble, which helps children in Paisley and is part-funded by the Scottish Government.

Concerns were flagged up in November at an audit meeting.

The club said among the areas being focused on are commercial agreements, sub-contract arrangements and potential non-payment of PAYE (Pay As You Earn) and National Insurance.

St Mirren Independent Supporters Association was to take its shareholding in the club to 51 per cent by buying chairman Gordon Scott’s shares.

Under the plans, Kibble would buy 27.5 per cent of Scott’s shares now.

A Kibble spokesman said: “We are confident any issues which may be uncovered will be dealt with quickly and decisively to ensure that the club’s reputation is beyond reproach.”

A police spokesman said: “We’re investigating a report of possible financial irregularities involving a football club in the Paisley area.”
