Cops called as Edinburgh Guy Fawkes thugs throw fireworks at locals and cars torched amid chaos in the capital

Cops have been called to an Edinburgh park amid reports of Guy Fawkes Night thugs throwing fireworks at bystanders while cars were torched in a night of chaos.

Both fire crews and police were called to West Pilton Park after youths were reportedly launching the explosives at locals.

The area is part of a dispersal zone set up by cops to deter illegal bonfires, gatherings and firework firing.

Police have the power to break up groups in the area.

On social media there have been many reports of bonfires in the capital.

In one image cars appear to be on fire in Hesperus crossway with police and fire crews both reportedly in attendance.

One picture shows flames in the Oxcars area close to a multi-storey block of flats.

Locals said a gang of 12 youngsters with their hoods up were setting fireworks off at people and cars.

A police spokesman told the Edinburgh Evening New s that the gang had fled by the time cops arrived.

She said: "Police were made aware of reports of youths throwing fireworks at West Pilton Park at around 7.20pm this evening.

"Both Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were called but the scene had been cleared by the time we arrived."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
