It’s understood cops were carrying out routine enquiries at the home around 9.15pm when they were confronted by an out-of-control yob.

He then grappled with the male officers, biting them and spitting on them before being restrained.

The cops went to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley, where they were treated for minor flesh wounds.

They now face an anxious wait for blood test results following the incident on Tuesday.

Inspector Tracy Harkins, from Paisley’s community policing team, said: “It’s totally unacceptable that police officers come to work in good health and go home a few hours later with injuries.

“The physical impact of biting is bad enough, but the mental anguish caused can sometimes be worse.

“Officers have to endure months of tests to ensure they have not been infected by blood-borne viruses.

“This has a serious detrimental effect on their day-to-day life with their children and partners.”

Two officers were also assaulted in a separate incident in the town in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The male and female officers were attacked by a man who was found lying in Maxwellton Street.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed two men, aged 29 and 44, have been arrested on suspicion police assault and reports have been submitted to the procurator fiscal.
