Cops are appealing for information after an officer was seriously injured in a car crash while attending to a broken down vehicle.
Two officers were travelling westbound on the A92 near Crossgates near Dunfermline when they discovered a Vauxhall Corsa broken down on the road at around 1.45pm on Thursday afternoon.
The pair stopped their BMW X5 behind the vehicle before one of the officers began directing traffic.
Three women inside the Corsa were escorted away from the road onto the nearside verge .
An officer inside the police 4x4 was seriously hurt after a car transporter smashed into the vehicle, causing it to crash into a grass embankment.
Pictures from the scene show the wrecked cop car lying on its side in the ditch next to the busy dual carriageway.
An officer in his forties was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where he is still being observed by medical staff.
One of the women inside the Corsa suffered minor injuries .
Motorists were advised to avoid area while emergency services kept the road closed for more than eight hours.
Police Scotland are now appealing for dash-cam footage as they continue their enquiries into the incident.
Inspector Andy Mather, of Fife’s Road Policing Unit, said: “Thankfully, neither the officer nor anyone else involved sustained life-threatening injuries. However, he remains in hospital for observations.
"I want to take this opportunity to thank the public, and colleagues, for their supportive messages and would encourage anyone who may have witnessed this, or was travelling on the A92 at this time and has dashcam footage, to get in touch."
