Detective Sergeant Lorraine Wilson told Lanarkshire Live : “Enquiries are at an early stage to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and I am appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

“If you were in the area of Maple Quadrant in the early hours of Sunday morning, and saw anyone acting suspiciously, please get in touch.

“I would also urge any motorists with dash-cams who were travelling through at the time to check their footage in case they have captured anything which could be of significance.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101.

Information can be left via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
