Copper Gone West suffers fatal injury on day three of Cheltenham Festival 2020

Racing fans have been paying tribute to racehorse Copper Gone West, who was fatally injured at the Cheltenham Festival on St Patrick's Thursday.

The seven-year-old was pulled up in the home straight during the second race, the Pertemps Network Final.

The screens were put up while vets assessed the injury, but unfortunately it proved to be fatal.

Tragically just before the race, Copper Gone West's trainer Tim Vaughan tweeted his excitement about seeing her run, posting a picture of the horse in the parade ring.

The mare won three of her 12 starts on the racecourse and £27,265 in prize money.

She had shown improved form in her last two starts, finishing second in a pair of Listed events.

The three-mile race was won by Sire Du Berlais (10/1) as Barry Geraghty extended his lead to four in the competition to be top jockey.

The hurdler was a second winner on the day for trainer Gordon Elliott, who struck in the opening contest with Samcro.

The result also continued the good form at the meeting for owner JP McManus.
