Copper Face Jacks: The Musical writer Paul Howard wants Dermot Bannon to star in a stage show

The masterminds behind Copper Face Jacks: The Musical have revealed a Room To Improve revue starring Dermot Bannon could be in the works.

And while they are only at the “idea” stage, writer Paul Howard said the popular RTE architect has already agreed to appear.

The 48-year-old author explained the idea stemmed the same way as their Coppers hit –as a joke between himself and producer Darren Smith.

He told The Sunday Mirror: “Darren wants to do Dermot Bannon: The Musical.”

The creator of legendary cult character Ross O’Carroll Kelly added: “Darren wanted to call it ‘Dermot Bannon Does The Famine’, and I said, ‘What does that mean?’ and he said, ‘I don’t know it just sounds like a great title’.

“We put it up on Twitter that this was what was next and Dermot Bannon immediately said, ‘That’s a great idea, I’d love to be in that.’

"So maybe that might be. We [could be sitting next year] talking about Dermot Bannon: The Musical and think again it just started out as a joke.”

“But sometimes things happen like that.

“Especially when it comes it musicals, it’s often the most ridiculous idea.”

Before the success of Copper Face Jacks: The Musical, which is returning to the Olympia Theatre for its second run this summer, Howard admitted he was put off musicals after the trouble that followed Anglo The Musical’.

He said: “We had so many legal problems with it, people were trying to shut us down and I kind of didn’t have the heart for it.

“But then Coppers came up as a joke really. Darren Smith said to me, “We should have done Copper Face Jacks: The Musical when we did Anglo’ and we both laughed but then over the course of a few months we were thinking, actually that is a good idea.”

  • Copper Face Jacks: The Musical will return to the Olympia Theatre from July 10 until August 10.
