One of the great classical ballets, Coppélia transports the audience from the everyday to a magical world. Set to Leo Delibes’ score, it tells the story of Dr Coppelius, an eccentric toy maker who dreams of bringing his mechanical toys to life. As the story unfolds, the village boy Franz learns why not to romance living dolls, with some help from his lover Swanilda.
The ballet is a landmark in the Australian Ballet’s history, performed in its inaugural season in 1962, and then returning in 2010 as a tribute to the company’s founding artistic director Dame Peggy van Praagh.
The 2016 production brims with comedy and charm, with set and costume designs by Kristian Fredrikson and production by Australian film and theatre luminary George Ogilvie. It maintains Arthur Saint-Leon’s original choreography, revised by Marius Petipa and Enrico Cecchetti, with additional choreography by Peggy van Praagh.
