Day 3 of the 2019 Copa América is headlined by the debut of one of the tournament’s big favorites: Uruguay. They begin their journey in Group C with a tricky opening match against Ecuador at the Mineirão, and the Celeste need to be at their best to start the group stage with a solid result.

Since losing to world champions France in last year’s World Cup quarterfinal, Uruguay began to slowly introduce younger players into their squad without affecting the team’s structure or ability to win matches. Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani are still the superstars, but midfielders like Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Torreira and Giorgian De Arrascaeta have added talent and energy to the midfield, and that perhaps makes Uruguay the best team in the tournament. However, their debut is against a very solid Ecuador defense that could cause big problems with their speed on the counter-attack. If Uruguay passes the first test with flying colors, they’ll send a big message to everyone else: the Celeste is really good and ready to win it all.
