Brazil comes into this one after an inconsistent group stage despite seven points from their first three matches. The team’s performance was widely criticized in the first two rounds, but a 5-0 destruction of Peru in the final group game was an encouraging sign for the Seleção ahead of the decisive games. Everton and Roberto Firmino are the biggest attacking hopes and if Barcelona stars Arthur and Philippe Coutinho do a good job providing the service from midfield, Brazil should be massive favorites to qualify for the semifinals.
However, they should not expect an easy night against Paraguay despite the fact they had just two points from three matches and no wins so far. Paraguay is the exact same team that knocked Brazil out of the 2011 and 2015 tournaments in the quarterfinal stage when they were overwhelming favorites. Both wins came thanks to two amazing defensive performances that took the game to penalty kicks where Brazil fell apart. Paraguay wants to do the same thing and will give Brazil all the possession they want while trying to stay solid at the back and look for a third straight upset.
Brazil hasn’t been to the semifinals since 2007, and this is a huge opportunity playing at home in front of a great Porto Alegre crowd. Paraguay will be looking for a shocking result. Expect 90 minutes of must-watch competition.
