COP26: What’s happening in the second week of the UN climate summit?

The UN climate summit is entering its second week, with a programme of “theme days” to help drive action on climate change Owen Humphreys/PA)

Monday November 8

Kicking off the week, Monday November 8 will focus on ‘Adaptation, loss and damage’ with key speakers including former US President Barack Obama.

With experts predicting climate change could push more than 00 million people into poverty by 2030, the day will look at how to adapt to prevent this and build a more climate-resilient future.

Local communities on the frontline of climate change will share their experiences - from the impact of extreme weather, to environmental degradation and rising sea levels - and what is being done to adapt.

Former US President Barack Obama is set to speak at the UN climate summit on Monday afternoon, where he will “lay out the important progress made in the five years since the Paris agreement took effect, highlight the leadership of young people around the globe, and urge more robust action going forward by all of us.”

Tuesday November 9

Tuesday is Gender and Science and Innovation Day at COP26.

The day will consider how women, girls and marginalised people are disproportionately affected by climate change - and how they can be part of the solution to halt it.

Headline events include one about advancing gender equality in climate action. Meanwhile, the day also looks at science and innovation, with a discussion dedicated to the goal of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5C and ways of achieving this.

Wednesday November 10

Transport will be the main focus on Wednesday, with industry leaders hoping to agree on accelerating the transition to 100 per cent zero emissions vehicles - which is needed to keep 1.5C within reach.

Transport leaders will come together to show their commitment to a zero-emission road future. All involved will have committed to 100 per cent zero emission vehicles sales by 2040.

The day will see the launch of the Clydebank Declaration, a global initiative within the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission, which will encourage support for the establishment of ‘green shipping corridors’ – decarbonised shipping routes between two ports.

Talks to overhaul the aviation sector and road freight industry are also on the table.

Thursday November 11

This is the last day with a dedicated programme, which is devoted to Cities, Regions and the Built Environment.

Buildings generate nearly 40 per cent of annual global CO2 emissions.

National, regional and city leaders and the private sector will talk about encouraging collaborative climate action, while panelists will discuss environmental action taking place at a national and local level.

Friday November 12

On this day negotiations are due to close, but previous COPs have overrun.

It is not yet known whether Prime Minister Boris Johnson will return to Glasgow at the end of the two-week conference in a bid to get negotiations over the line, or to welcome any deal that is secured.
