COP26 road closures, travel disruption and alternate routes in Glasgow this week

COP26 is officially underway with the massive international event taking its toll on Glasgow roads and other travel routes.

Bringing together thousand of delegates and hundreds of world leaders, the conference has forced roads to close with diversions in place to accommodate the event.

Glaswegian's will see travel impacted throughout November, with those in the west end particularly impacted.

The UN Climate Change Conference will run until November 12, but travel disruption is likely to continue afterwards.

The sheer number of delegates arriving - 30,000 - amount to 5 per cent of Glasgow's population in 2020.

Major travel routes like the Clyde expressway and the M8 junction 19 are shut for three weeks, with nearby Minerva Street - West Greenhill Place, which is located right next to the Exhibition centre train station, now also closed.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will want to know some of the many disruptions, closures and alternate routes to take as we have laid out here.

Road closures

Much of the area around the SEC and Finnieston will be closed (Get Ready Glasgow)

The Scottish Event Campus will be the main location for the UN climate change conference.

The area surrounding the SEC and much of Finnieston will be restricted from cars, cyclists and pedestrians during the conference.

In fact, some restrictions and full closures have already begun in Finnieston weeks ahead of the event.

The Clydeside Expressway will be fully closed from October 23 to November 15 in a hit to one of the west end's busiest routes.

Surrounding streets such as Finnieston Street will be fully closed from October 23 with local access only.

Confirmed COP26 road closures

  • Clyde Arce and Lancefield Quay

  • Clydeside Expressway from Partick Interchange to North Street

  • Congress Road

  • Congress Way: partial closures with lane restrictions

  • Finnieston Street from Lancefield Quay to West Greenhill Place: local access maintained

  • Lancefield Quay from Elliot Street to Finnieston Street: except for service buses

  • Clyde Arc except for service buses

  • Stobcross Road from Partick Interchange to Finnieston Street

  • Minerva Street: local access only between Minerva Way and West Greenhill Place

  • West Greenhill Place: local access only

Traffic congestion

Congestion heat maps are already available for each day of COP26 (Get Ready Glasgow)

Alternate routes across the west end and southside will be in place to deal with the many road closures in Finnieston, resulting in congestion across the area.

A congestion heat map of each day of the conference will be available from the Get Ready Glasgow website, a new campaign by Glasgow City Council.

The congestion expected on November 1, as pictured here, shows that much of the west end, city centre and some of the southside, including Govan and Ibrox, can expect major traffic.

Alternate routes

The west end will major significant congestion during the conference (Get Ready Glasgow)

Drivers, cyclists and even pedestrians will need to plan accordingly during this busy time.

Alternative routes for motorists

In the west end, alternate routes include Argyle Street, Dumbarton Road, Byres Road, Great Western Road, University Avenue and Gibson Street. Crow Road is the furthest west end alternate route.

North Street, Newton Street and Broomielaw are the city centre alternate routes.

Across the Clyde, Govan Road, Shieldhall Road and Edmison Drive are some southside routes.

Alternative routes for cyclists and pedestrians

In Finnieston, cyclists and pedestrians will be allowed to travel through Kelvinhaugh, Yorkhill Street, plus Argyle Street and the Clydeside Expressway.

Glasgow City Council's Get Ready Glasgow website has further information about all the upcoming disruptions and travel information.

Bus strikes

Stagecoach staff, as well as refuse workers in Glasgow, announced planned strikes during the conference - according the Unite Scotland.

It is advised that you check bus times and availability before setting off on your journey in Glasgow and the surrounding areas during the conference.
