COP26 Glasgow road closures this week as climate conference continues at SEC

With COP26 entering its second week, Glasgow will continue to see heavy disruption to roads and traffic.

While delegates and activists from all over the world proceed with negotiations on how to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis, Glaswegians will need to continue to plan their journeys ahead and be aware of any road closures caused by the summit.

As a result of these closures, there will also continue to be a heavy increase in congestion across the city.

The conference is set to officially come to an end on November 12, but some road closures will continue beyond that.

Here is everything you need to know about the road closures in Glasgow during the second week of COP26.

COP26 road closures

With COP26 taking place at the Scottish Events Campus (SEC), it is this and the surrounding areas that will continue to see the most significant disruption.

Parts of the M8 will remain closed up until November 15, with the Tradeston M8 On-slip at West Street closed with no access to North Street/Charing Cross.

Sections of Minerva Street, Finnieston Street, and the Clydeside Expressway will also be shut for the remainder of the conference.

Diversion routes will be in place around the SEC to keep traffic moving and Local Area Traffic Management Plans (LATMPs) are being developed to keep traffic moving for road users.

Pedestrian access will be maintained on Finnieston Street, Lancefield Quay and Clyde Arc at all times as will routes for emergency services.

Drivers are being urged to plan journeys ahead and prepare for delays.

Confirmed COP26 road closures

  • Clydeside Expressway from Partick Interchange to North Street until November 15

  • Finnieston Street from Lancefield Quay to West Greenhill Place until November 15

  • Lancefield Quay and Clyde Arc until November 15

  • Congress Road until November 17

  • Stobcross Road (section Parallel to A814) until November 21

  • Minerva Street - West Greenhill Place until November 13

Other road closures

The major COP26 protests saw 100,000 people take to city streets on Friday and Saturday - and while they were the biggest events scheduled, more protests are likely to take place throughout the week. Traffic congestion

Glaswegians should be prepared to plan ahead and remain aware of road closures until November 12 and beyond.

Congestion on the M8 will likely be more severe than usual, in particular for those leaving or joining the motorway at Charing Cross.

Roads in the West End and City Centre will also continue to see significantly increased traffic.

As a result of the A814 Clydeside Expressway closure, the Clyde Tunnel and the motorway network in the south of the city are expected to see heavy traffic increases.

Additionally, bus and rail services will continue to be much busier than usual as the climate conference continues, and it is advised that passengers leave extra time for their journeys.
