COP26 Glasgow: Coldplay's Chris Martin reportedly pushed to 'headline' climate change conference

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin could 'headline' the COP26 climate conference later this year, it's been suggested.

Martin has reportedly been asked by Boris Johnson’s chief of staff to perform at The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26.

It is the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference, scheduled to be held in Glasgow from 1 to 12 November 2021.

According to The Spectator , Downing Street Chief of Staff Dan Rosenfield has 'pushed' for the singer to attend the climate conference.

The pair are understood to have both studied at University College London.

COP26 will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

It's no secret that Chris Martin is a huge advocate for saving the planet from climate change, recently curating a playlist for ClientEarth on Spotify to raise awareness.

He also paused Coldplay’s album tour on hold in 2019 due to concerns over the carbon footprint impact of tours.

However, there are concerns from other aides that celebrities shouldn’t be flown in for a star-studded event, and have argued that the event should be held virtually.

Swedish climate campaigner, Greta Thunberg, has confirmed that she will not be attending the conference and has called for the event to be postponed over coronavirus fears.

It will be the biggest summit Scotland has ever hosted and it is being described as ‘the most significant climate event since the 2015 Paris Agreement.’

The UN meeting has already been delayed once from November 2020. The last Conference of the Parties (COP) summits had more than 20,000 people attending.

Update: A representative from Coldplay's publicity agency confirmed: "Contrary to media reports, the band have not been approached to appear or perform at COP26."
