COP26: Fresh details of major protest in Nottingham city centre

New details of a protest involving 30 groups have emerged as hundreds look set to march through Nottingham city centre this weekend.

The demonstration has been organised by the COP26 Coalition for Climate Justice and new details have emerged as of November 4.

Speakers will include Benjamin Rosser, a former police officer who set up the acclaimed Pythian Club, which works with young people across the city, as well as former MP Alan Simpson and union leader Cheryl Pidgeon.

The Pythian Club was set up in Nottingham to empower the city's underprivileged children and young people, while also encouraging individuals to be responsible and sustainable citizens in the face of the changing climate.

After initially assembling for speeches at the Forest Recreation Ground at 1pm the demonstration will be followed by a march along Mansfield Road before finishing at Old Market Square at 3pm.

“Encouraging young people to get involved and realise that they can make a positive change in their lives and that of their community is essential,” Mr Rosser said.

“Providing a platform to ensure young people have a voice is key in all we do."

Nottinghamshire Police and Nottingham City Council have been informed of the event and the route taken by the march, organisers have said.

The protest follows the meeting of world leaders in Glasgow for the COP26 summit.

A separate demonstration was due to place at County Hall on Thursday, November 4, with Extinction Rebellion protestors carrying oil drums and banners demanding action over the county council's pension fund.

At the weekend Nottingham has been selected as the 'regional hub' for the large-scale protest.

COP26 climate change talks continue in Glasgow until November 12.
