Cop shot with own gun called wife to say goodbye, court told

CCTV footage showing a police officer being dragged to safety after being shot with his own gun at Nepean Hospital has been played to a Sydney court.

Dog squad officer Luke Warburton was shot in the leg in January 2016 while trying to restrain Michael de Guzman, who was holding a female doctor captive at the time.

Mr de Guzman is facing several charges including shoot at with intent to murder because of the incident, in which he held a pair of scissors to the doctor's neck.

His defence does not dispute the events at Nepean Hospital on the night in question, but Mr de Guzman has pleaded not guilty on the grounds of mental illness.

Two CCTV clips were played to the court on the second day of his judge-only trial.

The clips show police rushing to the aid of the doctor Mr de Guzman was holding captive, as well as Mr Warburton being pulled away from the room where he was shot.

Mr Warburton on Tuesday told the court he thought he was going to die after being shot and called his wife to say goodbye.

He has undergone 14 surgeries to his leg, but has since returned to work three days a week.

The court was also played an audio recording from a police bodycam taken in the moments after the incident.

In it, Mr de Guzman can be heard erratically yelling out "I'm dying" and "they're taking me away".

Mr de Guzman also shot a hospital security guard, who survived.

He had been using the drug ice prior to the incident.

Mr de Guzman's wife, Lyn, also gave evidence, and described her husband as "a good parent" to their two children.
