Three Delhi Police personnel helped a 35-year-old woman deliver a baby girl — one of a twin — inside a PCR van on the way to a hospital on Saturday morning in Palam.

While the first baby was delivered inside the PCR vehicle with the help of a woman constable, the woman and her newborn were driven to a nearby hospital for the second delivery.

Ranbir Singh, additional CP (operations), said the pregnant woman’s husband called the police control room from near platform 1 of the Palam Railway Station around 10:30am.

“The man reported that his wife had developed labour pain and that he had nobody to seek help from. The call was transferred to the nearest PCR van PV Zebra-43 that reached the spot within five minutes and shifted the pregnant woman, Laxmibai. The vehicle rushed towards Shri Dada Dev Matri Avum Shishu Chikitsalaya,” said Singh.

Laxmibai and her husband work as labourers and live at a shanty near the Palam Railway Station.

According to the PCR van’s in-charge ASI Rajbir, woman constable Bhagwati who was deputed as gunperson in the vehicle helped with the delivery.

According to constable Bhagwati, the woman was in great pain and by the time they shifted her in their van, the first baby was on its way. “It was constable Dharamveer who drove the vehicle amid the morning traffic and admitted the woman and her newborn child at the hospital. Soon after her admission, the woman gave birth to another girl,” said ASI Rajbir.

The woman and her daughters are reported to be safe. The PCR team shall also be rewarded for the excellent work, Singh said.
