Coombs gets its parkrun, but not as it's used to

Coombs parkrun is set to return this month but not to the route runners are used to.

A new course will take in the recently constructed Molonglo River Reserve Path which officially opens on November 19.

Parkrun organisers are working with ACT City Services to finalise permit arrangements to enable the new Coombs event to commence the following Saturday.

The proposed 5km out-and-back course will be on a shared path alongside the Molonglo River and the Reserve.

A redirected route resulted from the ACT government's rejection of parkrun's permit application to use the trails around the North Weston Ponds.

The permit was refused following concerns the ACT Equestrian Association raised about the risk the event posed to horse riders in the area.

A spokesperson for the association told the Canberra Times that section of the Bicentennial National Trail was the only way equestrians from Weston Creek area and Kambah could get to the National Arboretum.

Should Coombs parkrun go ahead on November 21, it will be the first in the area since the coronavirus pandemic forced a shut down of the events nationally.

Tuggeranong parkrun, Lake Burley Griffin parkrun, Mount Ainslie parkrun, Ginninderra parkrun, Wagi Bridge parkrun and Gungahlin parkrun all recommenced on October 31, under social-distancing precautions.
