Cooling down the cows

CHIBA -- In a bid to keep milk production from dropping due to the heat, the Chiba prefectural government is testing ways to protect dairy cows from summer fatigue.

Damp cloths are being placed around the necks of 46 cows in Chiba Prefecture, a measure said to reduce body temperature for six to eight hours through vaporization. The roof of their cattle barn was also coated with paint to prevent the temperature from rising.

The effectiveness of these methods will be judged by measuring the body temperature and milk yield of the cows from July to September.

"I hope the cows' fatigue from the summer heat can be relieved, even a little," said Kiyoshi Kasori, a 41-year-old dairy farmer in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture, who has cooperated with the project.
