Cool stay of the week: a lodge in the middle of a lion reserve in Kent

You don’t have to go on a safari to see a roaming lion – all you need to do is take the two-hour drive down to Kent.

For this week’s Cool Stay of the Week, we’re heading southbound to the Lion Lodge located inside Port Lympne Reserve – the famed wildlife park in the Kent countryside.

Set on the 600-acre wildlife reserve you’ll find two timber clad safari-style lodges with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the reserve’s lion enclosure – so you can privately watch the big cats roaming right in front of you.

The rustic lodges can sleep four, with luxury bedrooms, a large living area with an open fireplace and natural wood-heated Scandinavian outdoor baths.

In the morning you’ll receive a complimentary full English breakfast before heading out on a guided truck safari to see the 80 exotic animal species found in the reserve.

Profits from a stay at the lodge go towards funding the conservation work of The Aspinall Foundation, who run the Port Lympne Reserve.

Where: Hythe, Kent

Sleeps: up to five.

Cost: from £1200 per night.
