Oct. 23--Clayco, a Chicago-based construction company, and real estate services firm CBRE Group won a beauty contest to help Cook County develop a new building housing clinical space and administrative offices on its Stroger Hospital campus, the county said Friday.
The county's public health system would like to replace the Fantus health center, which was built in 1959, and even older administrative space to improve amenities for patients and staff.
The development team led by Clayco and Los Angeles-based CBRE will have 3 1/2 months to come up with a preliminary design of the facility, which the county would like to open in mid-2018. The estimated cost of the project is $100 million, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Health and Hospital System said.
Clayco and CBRE beat two other finalists for the contract: a team led by MB Real Estate Services and one led by Navigant. The contract goes to the County Board for approval Wednesday.
The project is part of a larger planned redevelopment of the West Side campus, which includes the former Cook County hospital that was closed more than 12 years ago to make way for Stroger Hospital. The county will select a separate development team to come up with a plan to reuse the former hospital.
