Coogee Beach shark attack victim named as 35-year-old Leah Stewart

  • The woman who was attacked by a great white Shark at Coogee Beach in Sydney over the weekend has been named.
  • Leah Stewart, 35, is currently receiving treatment at St Vincent’s Hospital after sustaining injuries to her lower left leg and arms.
  • A witness to the attack, Nicola Logan, told Reuters that she saw a "massive pool of blood" in ⁠the water.
  • Off-duty lifeguard and paddleboard champion Charlie Verco, who rescued Ms Stewart and brought her to shore, told Nine News : “She popped up and the shark let her go and that was when I got close enough to grab her and put her on my board and take her to shore.”
  • Following the incident, Randwick Council closed local beaches for 24 hours, and the New South Wales government is considering new measures, including drones, to enhance swimmer safety, according to agriculture minister Tara Moriarty.
