Convicted stalker agrees contract with judge which may avoid him going to jail

A judge made a contract with a Kingswood man charged with stalking a woman.

Jacob Manfield, 26, of Downend Road, pleaded guilty to stalking involving fear of violence between April 27 and August 11 last year.

Judge Mark Horton told Bristol Crown Court it appeared Manfield suffered from ADHD but had not been formally diagnosed and it could take a year for him to be.

He told the court: "The problem that we have is that if the court is minded to attempt to reduce the sentence not to custody, that is a major step.

"This court cannot consider another sentence unless it has a clear structure to protect women in relationships with this man from him.

"That can only be done by a very structured mental health order which can be managed within the community."

A probation officer told the judge work could be conducted with Manfield during the course of a deferred sentence.

This would necessitate Manfield participating in the work and demonstrating his understanding of it.

The judge deferred sentence until July 30 and made a contract with Manfield.

Conditions of the contract include that Manfield attends probation appointments, makes positive efforts to get help offered, shows his understanding and asks questions if not.

Mansfield also has to remain out of trouble, not drink to excess and not take drugs.

The judge said the case would be reviewed on April 12.

He asked Manfield: "Do you think I'm going to be fobbed off?

"If you fail it, you will go to prison."

Manfield was handed a restraining order to have no contact whatsoever, including via social media, with a named party.

He was told to live at his address and abide by a curfew from 7pm to 7am.
