Convicted sex attacker faces new jail term for abuse against 11 youngsters at children's homes

A convicted sex attacker faces another jail term for horror abuse against 11 youngsters at children's homes.

Brian Dailey was today found guilty of a total of 16 charges following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. The now 75-year-old preyed on the vulnerable victims - nine boys and two girls - between 1969 and 1979.

Dailey was working at the time at the Smyllum Park orphanage in Lanark, Lanarkshire as well as Ladymary residential school in Edinburgh's Colinton.

The former councillor was locked up for 10 years in 2017 for similar abuse. However, a fresh probe was sparked after that case when more victims bravely came forward to reveal their ordeals.

Wheelchair-bound Dailey was today convicted of the charges including the rape of one girl and lewd and libidinous behaviour, as well as indecent and physical assault. He is due to be sentenced next month.

Ex-scout leader Dailey, formerly of Firhill Park, Edinburgh, had again denied the accusations against him. He said he started at Smyllum as a volunteer supposedly caring for youngsters while working at a chemist.

Dailey was found guilty of abusing three boys there. He recalled one as "crying quite a lot". He further attacked another of the trio during a trip to Girvan in Ayrshire.

Dailey told jurors how after losing his town council seat he moved to the capital around 1973. He then started working at Ladymary, ran at the time by the Good Shepherd Sisters.

It was there he raped one girl as well as sexually and physically assaulting the others. One of the boys preyed upon remembered his abuser having a Triumph Stag car at the time.

But, Dailey told his QC Brian McConnachie: "I have never driven at alI. "I sat my test 12 times. I had no interest in cars since I kept failing."

The same boy was also attacked at the Royal Commonwealth swimming pool in Edinburgh. Another of the victims claimed a nun used to "drug" children at the school.

Dailey stated: "I never saw anything like that. I think that is a false memory".

Prosecutor Alan MacKay later asked Dailey if he had gone through any "vetting" for a post.

He replied: "Not in those days."

In his evidence, Dailey also branded the allegations "rubbish".

After the verdict, jurors were told of Dailey previous jail term which involved the abuse of a number of children in the 1970s.

Defence QC Mr McConnachie today said: "As a result of publicity from those convictions, other people made complaints."

Lord Stuart remanded Dailey in custody and deferred sentencing until September 15 in Edinburgh.
