Convicted rapist told to prepare for prison

"Prepare for prison" was the advice given to a man who admitted rape.

Bassirou Sow appeared at Bristol Crown Court via video link today (August 31, 2021)

The 46-year-old, of no fixed address in the UK, pleaded guilty to raping a woman in August 2018.

John Stokes, defending, said: "It is immediately recognised the offence is very serious and a significant custodial sentence is an inevitability.

"He recognises that fact but he is a man of good character."

Mr Stokes said his client, who was aided by an interpreter, was a French speaker who normally lived with his expectant wife and child in Italy.

He asked for a pre-sentence report from the probation service.

Judge Euan Ambrose sanctioned a report and adjourned the case for sentence on September 27.

He told Sow: "The inevitable sentence for this offence is a prison sentence.

"You need to understand that and prepare yourself for a prison sentence next time."

Sow was remanded in custody.
