Convicted paedophile and former NSW Labor minister Milton Orkopoulos released from prison

Former NSW Labor minister and sex offender Milton Orkopoulos leaving prison on Friday.

Convicted paedophile and former New South Wales Labor minister Milton Orkopoulos has been released from prison after spending more than 11 years behind bars for child sex and drug offences.

The 62-year-old was handed a minimum sentence of nine years and three months after he was found guilty of 30 drug and child sex offences in 2008.

Orkopoulos was driven out of Sydney's Long Bay prison this morning.

His release conditions include electronic monitoring to ensure he does not go near his victims.

His parole had been delayed since 2017 because he did not take part in a sex offender program, but he subsequently completed it.

He was elected into the New South Wales Parliament in 1999 and handed the Aboriginal affairs portfolio in 2005.

The case was explosive for the then Labor government after it was revealed he had sex with minors between 1995 to 2006.

He met his victims through his political work, including at a Labor function, and by offering work experience in his electoral office.

He also supplied them with cannabis, heroin and alcohol before abusing them.
