Convicted felon living in vacant Chicago-area store had guns, ammo and a bobcat, police say

CHICAGO _ Police in a southern Chicago suburb said they arrested a convicted felon who was living in a vacant store and apparently kept a bobcat as a roommate.

Orland Park Police said in a news release they had received information that a felon was in possession of firearms in a former storefront in the 7000 block of 157th Street in Orland Park, and that detectives got a warrant to search the property.

Arriving a little before 3 p.m. Wednesday, police found 41-year-old Philip Giese living in the building, and during a search recovered two loaded handguns and more than 100 rounds of ammunition, according to a news release.

Police also found a spotted cat, larger than a typical domestic cat, that was later identified as a bobcat, according to police. The animal was turned over to officers with the state Department of Natural Resources, and Giese was cited for possessing a wild animal, according to the release.

Giese was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and police said they also recovered suspected narcotics that will be sent for processing.

During a court hearing, bail for Giese was set at $25,000, and he is scheduled to return to the Bridgeview courthouse March 28, police said.
