Conversations With Friends fails to be a hit with viewers as 30,000 people tune out of second episode

An average of 156,000 people tuned in to watch the debut of Conversations With Friends - but 30,000 people switched off watching the second episode.

The Lenny Abrahamson directed series aired on RTE One on Wednesday night. The broadcaster aired two episodes back-to-back.

RTE revealed an average 156,000 people watched the first episode, while an average 126,000 stayed on to watch the second episode.

But the show faced stiff competition as it aired at the same time as the final episode of Derry Girls as well as the Europa League final.

But an insider of the show said there is a view the show will continue to grow in audiences as the weeks go on.

An average 12,800 watched the show on RTE One Plus One, while the second episode was watched by an average 10,900 on the catch-up channel, while 13,100 caught the show on the RTE Player.

It’s a stark contrast from viewing figures for Sally Rooney’s Normal People back in 2020.

An average 371,000 watched the first episode when it first aired as Ireland remained in lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In December 2020 it was revealed Normal People became the BBC’s most streamed series of the year.

The series launched on BBC iPlayer in April of this year, racking up 62.7million views by the end of November.
