Controversy as 'southern Irish' named as most attractive accent in British Isles in survey

Good news! People love the Irish accent.

Bad news! "Southern Irish" has been named as the most attractive accent in the British Isles.

That's according to YouGov, a leading market research and data analytics firm used by the likes of the British Government.

It ran a poll to find the most 'attractive' and 'unattractive' accents in the "British Isles" - and 'southern Irish' took the top spot.

The YouGov poll was actually taken in 2014, but the results were put back into the public domain by YouGov on Thursday.

And it's safe to say that Irish people have not taken it well.

One person tweeted: "Ah yes, "Southern Irish" (maybe there's a term for the region?) is famous for having just the one accent.

"Donegal and Cork people's accents are indistinguishable, just like how in Southern Britain people from Yorkshire and Liverpool sound identical."

A second added: "Hey @YouGov! I am a scholar of Irish English. I can guarantee you that at no time in the history of Irish English scholarship has anyone referred to "Southern Irish" as an accent. It is actually quite xenophobic. Accents have no borders."

While a third made another brilliant point, noting that: "There's dozens of accents in Meath alone, let alone the whole country"

The explanation in the official results reads: "Southern Ireland, which for a long time had a shrinking population largely due to emigration (which means the accent is well-known worldwide), is the best accent to have for being considered attractive. It scores net 42, 11 points ahead of the standard accent of mainly the Southern areas of Britain – Received Pronunciation, or 'BBC English'."
