Controversial Welsh manager Mark Sampson lands new job in football

Controversial former England Women's manager Mark Sampson is back in football.

The 36-year-old has been appointed as first-team coach at League Two side Stevenage.

Sampson's return to the game comes after he was dismissed by the FA in September 2017 when "inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour" came to light in his previous role as manager at Bristol Academy.

There it was revealed he had a six-month relationship with a player aged over 18, while he was also the subject of bullying and racism claims, first made by England players Eni Aluko and then Drew Spence.

He was cleared on any wrongdoing but Sampson admitted his "big regret" over the handling of the claims, and apologised to both players.

He has returned to football as first-team coach with Stevenge under manager Dino Maamria.

"We are fully aware of Mark's past issues with the FA," Maamria told the club's official website. "I have known Mark for a long time and we have discussed what happened at length.

"I am convinced of his character and skillset. He will be a big asset to the club moving forward."
