Controversial talk show host Jerry Springer to speak at Edinburgh TV festival this August

Jerry Springer - the host of the incredibly long-running US talk show of the same name - is heading to Edinburgh to deliver a talk at the upcoming TV Festival.

The Jerry Springer Show ran for 27 seasons from 1991 to 2018, and was notorious for its OTT, fetishistic approach, with topics that included "Sex With Your Teen Sister", "Pregnant By The Same Teen Dad" and "A Man Marries A Horse."

During its run, the show was famous for delivering more on-air fights than any other programme, and featured an array of absolutely jaw-dropping moments - including proposals, enraged strippers, and (erm) a kung fu hillbilly .  It inspired an opera and a feature film and turned Jerry into a multimillionaire.

Jerry will be talking about his incredibly wild career on stage as part of a Q&A with Channel 4's head of news and current affairs Dorothy Byrne.

As well as discussing his controversial talk show, he'll also be speaking about the way politics and media intersect, particularly in the era of fake news.

Springer began his career as a political campaign adviser to Robert F. Kennedy before becoming mayor of Cincinnati.

The lecture will take place on 23 August, and will be produced by Jane Millichip, chief commercial officer of Sky Studios.

Hugh Laurie and Paul Feig will also be speaking at the event.

Speaking to Television Business International , he said: “Clearly one of the most beautiful cities in the world – it’s an honour to be asked to speak, usually I’m being asked to be quiet.”

Advisory chair Kelly Webb-Lamb added: “As the king of the tabloid talk show, who better to hear from right now? And with Dorothy Byrne by his side, it’s definitely box office. The popcorn is already in the microwave.”
