Controversial takeaway plans thrown out for second time

Controversial proposals for a new hot food and takeaway on the site of the Cosy Corner pub in Kilwinning have been knocked back for a second time by councillors.

The plans were initially turned down by North Ayrshire Council back in June and a Notice of Review was submitted by the appellants in respect of the application of the property in Pathfoot.

Six off-street car parking spaces would remain within the site to the south of the building and the takeaway would be on the site of the lounge bar of the pub.

The application was rejected as it was located outwith Kilwinning town centre which would not support the policy of Town Centre First.

It was said it would have a negative effect on the predominantly residential surrounding area.

Up to 15 new jobs would be created through the venture, the appellants claimed, and work would be done to the front of the building.

They argued you would need food to be served to help keep the pub going.

The takeaway would be accessed from the watering hole's car park with a ramp in place.

No objections were raised by Scottish Water or the council’s Environmental Health department.

However, noise and disruption, council officials added, would be caused by the project.

It was argued it was not justified that a takeaway could operate there since it was so close to Kilwinning town centre which had plenty of provision.

Planning chairman Robert Foster moved a motion that the application be rejected, and this was seconded by Scott Davidson and supported by the committee.
