Controversial student apartments in Liberties gets go-ahead despite objections from locals

Controversial student apartments at the Liberties have been given the go-ahead by An Bord Pleanala despite local objections.

Numerous high-end apartments will be built "akin to a boutique hotel" at the Brewery Block Site in The Liberties.

The project includes 368 bed spaces in blocks of between two and eight storeys and will also include a gym and a cinema room.

Locals were quick to object the plans as they felt it would lead to a "studentification" of the area.

They also felt that the Dublin 8 area was at saturation point as it is with more than 5,000 student bed spaces already built or being planned.

Residents added that the type of accommodation would lead to anti-social behaviour also.

Despite this, the appeals board agreed that the development would not be excessive and that students would only make up 8.7% of the area's population.
