Controversial plans to demolish Partick church given green light

An application to demolish the former Partick Baptist Church has been approved.

Glasgow City Council has given the green light for the controversial building warrant to go ahead.

The church dates back to the 1920s, but as it does not have listed building status, planning permission is not required, ReGlasgow reports.

The building, located on Crow Road, is owned by the Baptist Union of Scotland. Whilst the church has been closed for a number of years, before covid it was used by Queen’s Park Baptist Church.

The decision has been condemned by Glasgow MSP Paul Sweeney who called it “disgraceful”.

He tweeted: "Disgraceful decision. Partick Baptist Church was built by Andrew Black, his last before his death in 1927. He was an influential teacher of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. I'll contact Scottish Baptists to discuss support for an alternative to demolition. Queens Park Baptist Church would love to reopen it."

There have been no plans confirmed for the site following the demolition.
