Controversial plans for Formby Beach have really divided opinion

Plans have been drawn up to build a new cafe and toilets at one of Merseyside's most beautiful spots - and not everyone is happy about them.

Formby beach boasts sweeping sand dunes as well as picturesque pine forests and grasslands nearby and when the weather is nice, daytrippers come from near and far.

The National Trust says there is 'strong support' for toilets and a cafe at Lifeboat Road. But the proposals have caused a stir with people living nearby.

Some see the plans as a positive for the area.

But others have objected, because of congestion and parking issues, as well as the creation of an 'eyesore'.

Local resident Sam Edwardson said: "Lifeboat Road is fine as it is. Looking at the plans there's one genius who proposes building on an existing car park to create an eyesore.

"If you must have a building there stick it near the access road, there's a patch of land there not being used."

Gill Ratcliffe added: "Oh great, parking is abysmal there at the best of times."

Aggy Marcinkiewicz thinks it's a 'great' idea. She said: "Finally! I love Formby beach with my dog."

Sue Hartley echoed this, saying: "This has been needed for so many years and it will be well worth it."

Some people have asked if the new facilities could be eco-friendly.

Graham Johnson said: "I hope it includes solar panels, a ground source heat pump, re-usable rain water from storage tanks, and is made from recycled materials."

Steve Waterworth said he would like to see a 'grass-covered roof'.

Leaflets being circulated by the National Trust are asking for residents to come and give their opinion.

Part of the leaflet reads: "Local consultation shows there is strong support for the idea of toilets and a cafe at Lifeboat Road. The National Trust has asked architects to generate posters illustrating what new visitor facilities could look like and how they could fit into the coastal landscape.

" Formby Library is hosting a display between the 15th and 22nd June, so do drop in and take a look. To discuss the ideas with NT staff, come along to one of the consultation events."

Public consultation events will take place at the library on Duke Street on the following dates:

June 18 (1pm-5pm)

June 20 (1pm-5pm)

June 22 (10am-2pm)

There will also be a consultation event at Formby Market (Chapel Street) on Saturday June 28, from 9.30am-4pm
