Controversial Morningside homes plan will be decided in Edinburgh

The fight to stop new homes being built in Morningside will be heard in Edinburgh for a second time.

Councillors agreed to reject the controversial application at the end of last year.

However, applicant Robert Hill has appealed for the decision to be overturned with a Scottish Government Reporter deciding the fate of the plans to be build up to 92 homes.

Central Scotland list MSP, and Scottish Labour leader, Richard Leonard this week urged the Scottish Government to put people and democracy before profit.

Mr Leonard said: “I share the community’s frustration that the developer has submitted an appeal to the rejected proposals.

“The community has been clear in their objection and the council clear in their rejection.

“This development would bring additional pressures on existing local services, including the drainage and sewer system and, in particular, an increase in the school-roll of Morningside Primary School.

“Existing residents in Morningside have experience problems with sewerage ingress and there would undoubtedly be a huge increase in traffic at an already busy junction.

“The proposed area is home to many wildlife and their habitat would be disturbed and threatened by this development.

“The Scottish Government must do the right thing, support the community, endorse the decision taken by North Lanarkshire Council, and reject this appeal.”

Mr Hill has already appealed to the Scottish Government after North Lanarkshire Council threw out original plans back in 2015.

The appeal was rejected after concerns regarding the sewage system and that the new homes would have a colossal impact on the nearby Morningside Primary as well as being built on greenbelt land.

Over 60 residents submitted their objections to the proposals to the new application.

However, in September it was revealed that the land, formerly greenbelt, has now been re-zoned for housing in the council’s new Local Development Plan.
