Controversial Grand Designs ‘spaceship’ home near Milton Keynes sells for £1.2 million

A dramatic roundhouse, which polarised opinion in the architectural world when featured on Grand Designs in 2014, has found a new buyer after being listed for £1.2 million.

Built near Milton Keynes by retired GP Peter Berkin and his wife Chard, an alternative medicine practitioner, the semi-circular five-bedroom home clad in Siberian larch ended up costing double the £200,000 the couple had budgeted.

Presenter Kevin McCloud described it “as though a giant wooden spaceship has landed on top of Stonehenge and interlocked with it.”

The couple disagreed over many elements of their epic self-build, including the shape, yet the final result was dubbed “magnificent” by McCloud.

The spaceship home was sold for £900,000 in 2016, and then relisted in 2019. It has now sold once more, this time for around £1.2 million.

Less than an hour from London, via a 10-minute car journey to Milton Keynes then a 35-minute train, the extraordinary roundhouse has 3,000sq ft of living space including five bedrooms and a home cinema.
